The Supreme Court of Nigeria has nullified the national convention held by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025.
The convention had produced a factional national executive led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN.
The apex court’s decision followed months of protracted legal disputes surrounding the exercise.
The convention was conducted despite existing court orders restraining the party from going ahead with the gathering.
Earlier, a Federal High Court had barred the PDP from holding the convention, citing violations of the party’s constitution and failure to follow due process. The court also pointed to unresolved disputes from state congresses and the exclusion of some aspirants from the process.
Despite the order, the convention proceeded, prompting further litigation.
The Court of Appeal later upheld the decision of the lower court, affirming that the convention was held in violation of valid court orders and that its outcome could not stand.
Dissatisfied with the rulings, the Turaki-led faction approached the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the judgments and validate both the convention and the executives it produced.
However, in its final verdict, the apex court voided the Ibadan convention, thereby affirming the earlier judgments and bringing an end to the legal battle over the legitimacy of the factional leadership.
