The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has dismissed claims that he is being sponsored by any political godfather, insisting that his only backing comes from God.
Fubara made the clarification during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday, where he also distanced his political ambition from that of his brother, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
According to him, he and the governor hold different political beliefs and perspectives, stressing that his governorship bid is driven by his personal vision for Rivers State rather than any political arrangement.
“I don’t have a godfather; I have God the Father. If my ambition is based on the assumptions being made, then it would mean I have no vision or direction of my own,” he said.
He noted that the political crisis involving his brother and his party is well known to Nigerians, adding that their political paths are not the same.
Fubara said the state is currently passing through a difficult period, with different narratives being pushed by various interests, but maintained that his focus remains on what he described as the rescue and development of Rivers State.
“There are many narratives out there, but we remain focused. Our concern is ensuring that Rivers State is moved in the right direction,” he said.
Blessing Fubara formally joined the 2027 governorship race after obtaining the NDC’s expression of interest and nomination forms in May 2026.
His entry into the contest comes amid the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, which has been dominated by the rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The dispute has triggered a series of political confrontations, including impeachment threats, factional divisions within the legislature and prolonged legal battles.
