The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of police officers involved in the shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
This was made known in a statement released on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid. The statement followed the conclusion of an investigation into the incident that happened on April 26, 2026, which led to the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.
The police explained that all the officers involved were immediately removed from duty in Delta State and sent to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they went through a fast disciplinary process.
The investigation showed that the main officer involved did not follow the rules.
According to the statement, ASP Nuhu Usman went against Force Order 237 and other rules guiding the use of firearms. His actions were described as unlawful, unprofessional, and against his duty to protect lives.
Because of this, the disciplinary committee recommended that he and other officers involved should be dismissed. The Inspector-General agreed with this decision and sent it to the Police Service Commission for final approval.
The police also said that once all internal procedures are completed, the officers will be handed over to the proper authorities for prosecution in court.
They stressed that being a police officer does not give anyone the right to take a life unlawfully, and any officer who does so will face serious consequences.
The Force also promised to handle the case openly and make sure justice is clearly done.
They sent their condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that the matter would not be taken lightly.
The incident became widely known after a video showed Ogidi being shot during a police operation on April 26. The police had earlier said he was arrested for allegedly carrying a package suspected to contain a firearm, but the officer shot him without following proper procedures.
This case has added to growing concerns about police behavior, as authorities continue to stress the importance of accountability and obeying the law.
