Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Monday dismissed reports that any commercial vessels had moved through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing back against earlier claims by the US military that two American-flagged merchant ships had passed through the strategic route.
“No commercial vessels or oil tankers have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the past few hours, and the claims of American officials are baseless and completely false,” the Guards said in a statement on Telegram.
Meanwhile, Iran’s army commander, Amir Hatami, alleged on X that US naval forces attempted to approach the area stealthily but were met with force.
“American destroyers, using the trick of turning off the radar, were approaching the Strait of Hormuz, but our response was fire.”
“Cruise missiles and combat drones took flight. The security of this region is Iran’s red line,” he added.
Earlier, the US military had maintained that its guided-missile destroyers successfully navigated the Strait and entered the Gulf as part of a fresh operation aimed at restoring maritime movement in the region.
US Central Command also stated that “two US-flagged merchant vessels have successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz and are safely headed on their journey”.
