Five governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State have agreed to pursue a consensus arrangement ahead of the 2027 election, in a bid to promote unity within the party.
Details from a letter obtained by PUNCH Online on Monday show that the decision followed extensive and cordial discussions held at the Maitama residence of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
In the letter, the aspirants stressed that the party’s collective success outweighs individual ambitions.
“We… hereby resolve that the overall interest of the party and its success are more important than our individual ambitions,” the statement read.
They added that adopting a consensus approach would help prevent internal divisions, save time and resources, strengthen unity, and position the party as a cohesive force ahead of the campaign season.
The aspirants also pledged to accept the party leadership’s final decision and fully support whoever emerges as the PDP’s governorship candidate.
The document further revealed that consultations with supporters across the state are already underway.
Signatories to the agreement—Ali Ahmad, Omar Bolaji Gambari, Ladi Hassan Athavs, Olaseni Ibiwoye (SAN), and Kale Kawu—committed to engaging their supporters to uphold the pact and avoid actions that could threaten party cohesion.
Confirming the development, PDP spokesperson Olusegun Adewara described the agreement as authentic, indicating official backing for the consensus move.
The shift to a consensus model is expected to reshape the party’s preparations for 2027 in Kwara, potentially reducing the risk of divisive primaries that have weakened opposition efforts in the past.
